Thank the Heavens for Co-Pilots

After enjoying a spectacular full moon on Friday night Joy and John traveled through Texas Hill Country last weekend 30-31 January visiting some of the most charming towns’ one can find.

We shared a meatloaf sandwich in Comfort, TX; shopped antiques in Bandera and Boerne, TX got frustrated with one another trying to locate downtown Castroville, TX; danced in Texas’ oldest continually used dance hall in Gruene, TX; feasted next to a fire and warmed in a cozy bed and breakfast in New Braunfels,TX; watched the Sun break through the clouds in San Marcos, TX; and are glad we didn’t blink so as not to miss Wimberley, TX. The hill country was beautiful Sunday morning, as it was very cold and foggy. Frost covered every blade of grass, tree limb, and fence.

We don’t have many pictures to share but that’s probably fortunate since one of the most memorable aspects of the whole trip was the ridiculous amount of dead skunks in the road. (I one it, You two it, Someone else three’s it….on and on till someone 8’s it-Love that game!) They must be in mating season. And, unfortunately they move pretty slowly. Guess they don’t have to run from many predators.

All through the rolling hills we enjoyed the scenery and were thankful to have each other to share all our adventures with. Thus the title of this entry, “Thanks for Co-Pilots”. The name is also a memorial to two great four-legged friends lost this past week.

First our great friends Nicole and Chris living in Vietnam lost their beloved cat. The Cat, or "Kitty" was a faithful pet and companion to for a very long time. She stuck with them through a lot of changes: college, a two year stay in Delaware while Nicole was in the Peace Corps, then a move to Washington, DC, grad school, a teaching job in inner city DC, then a move to Arlington, their marriage, their new house, a baby and finally a move to the other side of the world. She was an adoring cat with seemingly endless patience and devotion, and they loved her very much. Kitty will be sorely missed.

On this side of the world, more specifically in CO, our friends Kim and Russell lost their long time companion Dakota. Dakota was a beautiful yellow lab who was as sweet as could be. Dakota was part of their family for years and pre-dated their +/- 10-yr relationship. We were fortunate to spend a weekend with all three of them this past August while traveling from Mexico to Texas. We haven’t met many other dogs in our time that compared. He was the perfect Co-Pilot for many years and will also be missed tremendously.

To all the Co-Pilots out there, whether on two legs or four, thanks for your unconditional love and support!
